GROUP LEADER
An essential component related to the effectiveness of the group counseling is the leadership. The leader plays a vital role in both the dynamics of the group and the outcomes of its members. Although much is unknown about effective group facilitation, several leader characteristics and behaviors are correlated with group effectiveness. Group leaders need to have very important group leadership skills before they can go into helping individuals deal with their own problems. Group leaders must have knowledge of how groups’ best function and they possess the skills to intervene in timely and effective ways. When a group leader creates a group climate that fosters interpersonal norms such as directness, openness, respect and concern for one another, these norms will create therapeutic interactions among the members. Essential leader behavior is to cultivate a group climate that is secure, constructive, and encouraging, yet strong enough to at times withstand highly charged emotions, challenges, and interactions between members. In addition to personal characteristics, group leaders need to acquire a body of knowledge and a set of skills specific to group work. Counseling skills can be taught, but there is also an element of art involved in using these skills.

How leaders act within groups depends on the type of group they are leading. According to Kurt Lewin, the type of leadership style is important to know as a group leader, there are Authoritarian Style Leaders who are authoritarian do not ask for or take into consideration suggestions from group members. Instead of they structure and direct groups according to their own wishes, purposes, and the information available to them. Democratic Style Leaders who prefer the democratic approach when working with groups make certain that all activities are discussed by group members. They encourage cooperative behaviors and initiatives. According to Corey and Corey (1992) that group leaders must also have an openness to self, to others, and to new experiences. In addition, effective leaders care for those with members, empathy present for them, believe in group process, and have confidence in themselves and group members. Effective group leaders also make a sense of humor that allows them to put the problem and avoid becoming too serious.
ReplyDeleteAs I know, there are three basic styles of leadership which is authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire. Leaders who use authoritarian style make all the major group decisions and demand compliance from the group members. Authoritarian leaders typically make decisions on their own and tell other group members what to do and how to do it. Authoritarian leadership can be beneficial when a decision needs to be made quickly or when a project or situation is particularly stressful. However, it tends to create dysfunctional and even hostile environments, often pitting followers against the domineering leader. The second is democratic leadership style. Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. Democratic leaders tend to make followers feel like they are an important part of the team, which helps foster commitment to the goals of the group. The third is laissez-faire leadership. Laissez-faire leaders offer little or no guidance to group members and leave the decision-making up to group members. While this style can be useful in situations involving highly qualified experts, it often leads to poorly defined roles and a lack of motivation. The characteristics to be an effective group leaders are they must strike a balance between asserting leadership and creating a safe, welcoming environment for group participants. Effective group leaders are clear, compassionate communicators who use active listening skills to interpret the needs and feelings of clients in the group.

As I know, there are 3 types of leadership style. The first one is Authoritarian where the leader tend to be directive and rigid in giving advice and direct the movement of the group. The second one is Democratic where the leader give the opportunity for group members to develop their own potential, cooperate with and share responsibilities within the group. Meanwhile Laissez-faire does not provide structure or direction of the groups. The characteristics to be an effective group leader is to be actively listening where leaders should be sensitive towards any kind of response among group members, linking skill where leader help members feel the similarities of the issue arise, show empathy and encouragement is also some of the good characteristic to be an effective leader.

There are three types of leadership style in conducting group counseling according Kurt Lewin (1939) which are authoritarian, democratic or laissez-faire leader. Authoritarian leaders known as autocratic leaders. This style of leadership is strongly focused on both command by the leader and control of the followers. Authoritarian leaders make decision independently with little or no input from the rest of the group. Then is democratic leadership which is typically the most effective leadership style. Democratic leaders offer guidance to groups members but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. Lastly is Laissez-Faire or known as delegative leadership which is the least productive of all three groups. This style leadership, group leaders offer little or no guidance to group members and leave the decision making up to group members. The result in the groups tend to lacked direction and members who blamed each other for mistakes and made less progress. Next, the characteristics to be an effective group leader is a leader must have firm identity which is enable leaders to understand and manage their own emotional lives. Also, leaders must have trust to other members. Without trust it is difficult to accomplish a key aim of the group. Then, leaders must have empathy enable leaders to understand group members feeling and also help group members identify and process this painful feeling.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have learned and I know, there are three types of leadership style in conducting group counselling such as Authoritarian, Democratic and Laissez-faire leadership. First, Authoritarian leadership is best applied to situations where there is little time for group decision-making or where the leader is the most knowledgeable member of the group. The autocratic approach can be a good one when the situation calls for rapid decisions and decisive actions. Second, Democratic or Participative leaders encourage group members to participate, but retain the final say in the decision-making process. Group members feel engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative. Last one, Laissez-faire leaders offer little or no guidance to group members and leave the decision-making up to group members. While this style can be useful in situations involving highly qualified experts, it often leads to poorly defined roles and a lack of motivation. In order to be effective, group leaders must be aware of the power and potency of groups. They must plan ahead and they must be sensitive to the stage of development of the group. Equipped with this knowledge they can utilize appropriate skills to help their groups develop fully (Gladding, 1994). Proper preparation and strategic intervention increase the chance of running a counselling group smoothly and effectively.

There are three main types of leadership style that has been significantly recognized in a group counseling session which include the authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire styles. The first Authoritarian style is also known as autocratic leaders. It offers a simple expectation of what needs to be achieved, when and how it should be accomplished from each members. This leadership style is strongly focused on both leader command and follower control. Next is the Democratic style of leadership. This second style reflect on vice versa of the previous style, which usually the most successful form of leadership implementation. Democratic leaders give advice to members of the circle, but often engage with them and require feedback from other members of the group. The last leadership style is the Laissez-Faire leadership. This style particularly gave the group members little or no guidance, and leave decision-making to group members. While this style may be useful in situations involving highly qualified experts, it often leads to lack of motivation and poorly defined roles. Among the characteristic of an effective group leader are being empathy and have the ability to actively listening towards client issue, have an excellent communication skill and sense of acceptance towards client initially.

A leadership style refers to a leader's characteristic behaviors when directing, motivating, guiding and managing groups of people. There are three types of leadership style which are authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire. Leaders who use authoritarian make all the major groups decisions and demand compliance from the group members. Authoritarian leaders typically make decisions on their own and tell other group members what to do and how to do it. Authoritarian leadership can be beneficial when a decision needs to be made quickly or when a project or situation is particularly stressful. Democratic leadership style is someone who encourage group discussion and believe in decision making through consensus. Democratic leaders still make the final decision, but do so only after carefully considering what other group members have said. Usually their decision goes with the majority. Democratic leaders are generally the most popular. They make members of the group feel included and promote teamwork and creativity. Unlike the authoritarian, the laissez-faire leader wants to be hands off and tends to offer little guidance or direction to the team. The laissez-faire expexts group members to solve problems on their own. This approach can work if the team is highly experienced, skilled, self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal direction.
ReplyDeleteThere are several characteristic that a group leader needs to have in order to conduct the group effectively which is trust, a group leader should be able to trust others in order to make group members trust the group leader. A leader also needs to have a sense of humor in the group and need to use it appropriately. Next, a leader needs to be confident in handling a group session. Besides, spontaneous are also the help the group counselling be more effective which is group leader should be creative and flexible. Last but not least, be an active listener and empathy. Leaders need to pay attention to the context of what the members of the group are saying in order to help group leader understand their feeling, thoughts, and others better.

From what I learned, there are 3 main characteristic of the leadership, which are authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire. This leadership styles created by a psychologist named Kurt Lewin and a group of researchers in 1939. Moreover, the leadership means about a person who going to lead the groups or teams. The way how leadership styles refer to a leader’s behaviour toward group members. The behaviour pattern is that the leader reflects his role as a leader from what he/she handle the group. There are advantages and disadvantages every each of leadership styles. The task-oriented of leadership styles is democratic. The democratic leadership styles is when a leader provides guidance and direction, but also encourages feedback from group members and takes their opinions fairly. This is can an encouraging loyalty from the group members, improving teamwork together and for the time-being also can makes the group members rapport easily. Next, is the ultimate people-oriented leadership style is laissez-faire, which means “let-it-be” leadership. This styles allows the group members a maximum freedom to make decisions. It gives group members a high degree of independence in their operations on the groups itself. The leader itself doesn’t provide much directions or guidelines, all the decisions made from the group itself. This encourage group members to feel the responsible for their group itself, but it also can make the group inactive when the members are not responsible it. The last one is an autocratic or usually called as “command and control” leaders. Which is, “I am the boss” in the group. However, the autocratic styles provide clear expectations and directions to group members, telling them what to do and when and how to do it. But, autocratic leaders make decisions on their own without input from the rest of the group. For this styles can apply to the new norming of the groups or the leader has far more knowledge than the members, but sometimes it can damage the group member morale and spirit.
