Dr. Isa have explained well about what is Motivational Interview. MI is such a way or tool to keep motivate client to make changes. There are four process of MI which is engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. The most important part in MI is engaging , it is because to make someone change is not as easy as ABC, they need support and trust , so through engaging client will be more confidence to make changes.

  2. Thank you Dr for organizing a talk like this because I can understand more deeply about what motivational interviewing is. What I understand is that MI is a counseling method that involves enhancing a client’s motivation to change. There are three components of MI spirit consisting of collaboration, evocation and autonomy. Then I can learn about what ambivalence is and also the principles found in motivational interviewing. In addition, there are 4 types of assessments tools that can be used in this MI, namely Stage of Change, PAYOFF MATRIX, ICR Scales and Value Cards.
Interestingly, about Dr. Isa's explanation, I was able to find out how to identify skills that can be used in MI by using the AROSE acronym, namely affirmations, reflective listening, open ended questions, summaries and elicit change talk. Among the strategies for us to elicit change talk are by asking evocative ques, using readiness rules, looking back / looking forward, using hypotheticals and key questions (5W1H). Lastly, I can also know about the training required in MI skill that is review the definition, practice the skills right after the definition, utilize the OARS worksheet, and utilize the MI workbook.
The topic I studied this week is very meaningful to me because it can help me in understanding how to do this motivational in the right way. So, this motivational interview is important in helping clients to resolve ambivalence and help them elicit their own motivation to change. Thank you.

  3. Bismillah, thank you to Dr Rashid and the class committee for making the talk happen. Also big thanks to Dr Isa for delivering wonderful talk about Motivational Interviewing. First and foremost, I learn that addiction counselling related to behavioral change and personal traits. The objectives of the talk are to provide an introduction to the spirit of MI and learn about MI principles to use with individual in behavioral change. So what is MI? MI is directive, person centered counselling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavioral change. There are three components of MI spirit which are collaboration, evocation and autonomy. The spirit of MI defined by the motivation to change is elicited from the person, not externally. The therapeutic is important in helping the clients not based on the screening and intervention. Some characteristics of MI are guiding more than directing, listening as much as telling and collaborative conversation. So, the key of MI is we must have joint understanding with the clients in order to figure out his/her issue and helping him to make the change that come from himself. The stages of change consist of Pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse. The stages are the guidance of the clients journey in order to change the specific behavior. The principles of MI that must be hold by the counselor are AREDS (Avoid arguing, Roll with resistance, Express empathy, Develop discrepancy, Support self efficacy).
In short, the talk was so interesting and beneficial for us as counselling students. We learn on how to apply the MI in the counselling session so that we can help the client to make the change of the behaviour or addiction.

  4. Thank you to Dr Rashid for inviting Dr Isa to give the speech about the motivational interviewing. Before this I just go through the video motivational interviewing at the YouTube and read some notes, to get the information about this topic. When I entered this talk, Dr Isa explained more details about motivational interviewing. I have learned the aims of motivational interviewing to help the people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. Other than that, the principles of motivational interviewing AREDS are avoid arguing, roll with resistance, express empathy, develop discrepancy and support self efficacy. When I am practicing counseling session I try to apply MI skill ‘AROSE’ affirmation, reflective listening, open-ended questions, summaries and elicit change talk with the clients. I am so lucky because by listening to this talk I able to get more understanding about motivational interviewing.

  5. Alhamdulilah from this talk, there are many knowledge I gain such as background and introduction about MI. Other than that, I learnt components, skills and characteristic of MI skills. Actually, all these are very important to me as a counsellor to apply this MI to help clients or people explore and resolve their ambivalence (addiction) in therapeutic relationship with voluntary. In addition in this MI, we cannot persuade client to change for any reasons because all the goals and determination depends on the client. Actually, the core or basic counselling such as reflective listening are main importance things as counsellor to practice in their life so we can be a good counsellor outcome.

Motivational interviewing is quite a bit different than a lot of other modalities. It is a brief therapy and is narrowly focused on substance use or sometimes other issues where motivation is considered central to making some sort of change. In motivational interviewing, the therapist works to expand the gap between the choices an individual is making and their behaviors and goals. Therapists using motivational interviewing will help a client explore that ambivalence. Ambivalence is when an individual has strong feelings in opposite directions. In motivational interviewing a therapist rolls with resistance. The stages of change in motivational interviewing are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance (sometimes a sixth stage added like relapse and termination). One acronym used in motivational interviewing OARS: open questions, affirmation, reflective listening, and summary. Another acronym is RULE: resist the righting reflex, understanding the client’s own motivation, listen with empathy, and empower.

  7. On 17th December 2020, I had attended the online forum that talked about Motivational Interviewing presented by Dr Isa. From the forum, I learned more about Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational Interviewing is a common approach that usually use in addiction. There are many learning objectives of motivational interviewing such as to provide an introduction to the spirit of MI, to provide a foundation to build skills, to learn about MI principles to use with individuals on behaviour change and to assess motivation for readiness to change. Motivational interviewing is directive, person centered counselling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. There are 3 components of MI spirit. Firstly, collaboration which mean that counsellor and client working in partnership. Secondly, evocation which is draw out ideas and solutions from individuals. Lastly, autonomy which is decision making left to the person. The characteristics of Motivational Interviewing are guiding, dancing, listening, collaborative conversation, evokes from a person what she or he already has and lastly is honouring of person’s autonomy. Keyword for Motivational Interviewing is ambivalence. Ambivalence such as “I want to, but I don’t want to”. It is natural phase in the process of change and normal aspect of human nature, not pathological. Ambivalence is a key to resolve for change to occur. From the forum, I had learned about principles of motivational interviewing which is “AREDS”. A for “Avoid arguing”, R for “Roll with resistance”, E for “Express empathy”, D for “Develop discrepancy” and S for “Support self-efficacy”. There are 4 types of resistances which are arguing, denying, ignoring and interrupting. There are also 4 processes in Motivational Interviewing. Firstly, engaging which is the process of establishing a trusting and mutually respectful relationship. Second, focusing which is an ongoing process of seeking and maintaining direction. Third, evoking which is eliciting a client’s own motivation for change. Lastly, planning which is developing a specific change plan that the client agrees to and is willing to. I also can learn about assessment tools which are stage of change, payoff matrix, ICR Scales and Value Cards. There are 5 skills of Motivational Interviewing known as “AROSE”. A for “Affirmations”, R for “Reflective listening”, O for “Open ended questions”, S for “Summaries” and E for “Elicit change talk”.

  8. Assalamualaikum, thanks to Dr Rashid and others who makes this forum about motivational interviewing delivered by Dr Mohamad Isa himself.

So, from the talk I learned what motivational interviewing is, the features it contains, principles of motivational interviewing and so on. What I understand as a whole is that this motivational interviewing is an approach that assists individuals to explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change.
Besides, it helps treat addictions and to motivate the client who wants to resolve their ambivalence. It also helps to encourages a person to develop personal motivation for engaging in the change process.

  9. Alhamdulillah. Thank you Dr Rashid for invited Dr Isa to give the speech about Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational Interviewing meaning directive, person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalance. The MI spirit is the empowerment counsellor to client that include collaboration, evocation and autonomy. First, collaboration that is working in partnership with client. When a counsellor made a good relationship with client and client do not feel awkward when the session begin. He will consider that a counsellor as her friends that he trust the most to share all of his problem. Second, evocation is draw out ideas and solutions from individuals. This means that a counsellor will provide ideas and some of solutions to the client but depend on the person what he will choose for his problem. Third, autonomy is decision making left to person or client that make it.
Moreover, the capital of AREDS in MI that have the personal meaning. First, A for avoid arguing that means a counsellor must do their responsibility as a counsellor how to talk and others with client to avoid arguing. Next, R stand for Roll with resistance means an approach to helping people change habitual behaviour which is causing problems for them or others. E for express empathy thats reflects an accurate understanding assumes the person’s perspectives are understandable, comprehensible, and valid. D for develop discrepancy means current behavior versus future goals. Lastly, S for support self-efficacy is patients are responsible for choosing and carrying out actions to change.
Last but not least, applying principles of motivational interviewing to everyday patient interactions has the potential to elicit behavior change that contributes to positive health outcomes. These changes could have an important impact on the management of major diseases in women. In addition, the principle of effective listening improves physician patient communication and patient satisfaction during all types of physician patient encounters. Motivational interviewing principles should be incorporated into physician and medical student training.

  10. Thank you Dr Rashid for invited Dr Isa to give a talk about Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is an important knowledge for us as counselling students. What I learn from this talk, motivational interviewing aims to help people explore and resolve ambivalence about behaviour change. There are 3 components of MI spirits, first is collaboration which is working in partnership. Second is evocation, which is draw out ideas and solutions from individuals. Third is autonomy which is decision making left to the person. Next we learned about ambivalence, for instance “I want to, but I don’t want to”. Ambivalence is key issue to resolve change to occur. Dr Isa also share an acronym for principles of MI which are “AREDS”. A stands for Avoid Arguing. R stands for Roll of Resistance. E for Express Empathy. D for Develop Discrepancy. S for Support Self Efficacy. Futhermore, Dr Isa explained about stage of change which are Pre-contemplation, Comtemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance and Relapse. With Dr. Isa explanation, we understand more deeply about this stage, it is because, in the subject of drug rehabilitation counselling, we need to do behaviour change reflection every week and need to relate our behavior change with this stage. Last but not least, Dr Isa also share about MI skills which are “AROSE”. A for Affirmation. R for Reflective listening. O for Open Ended Question. S for Summaries. E for Elicit Change Talk.

  11. Thank you to Dr Rashid for inviting us to this talks. Based on this talk, I have learned the overview of motivational interviewing. Motivational interviewing is a person-centered counseling that help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. The stages are including; engaging, focusing, evoking and commitment. In motivational interviewing, the counselor needs to fulfill the following characteristics such as; guiding, listening, have collaborative conversation, evokes from a person what she/he already has and honoring of a person’s autonomy.
The principles of motivational interviewing including “AREDS”, A for avoid arguing, R for roll with resistance, E is for express empathy, D for develop discrepancy and S for support self-efficacy. Other than that, I also learn ICR Scales in behavior changes. It is including the Importance, Confidence and Readiness. Importance means “how important is it for you to change right now?”. Confidence means “if you decide to change, how confidence is you that you could do it?” and readiness means “how ready are you to change right now?”. These scales are important and become a guideline to the clients to know their readiness scales in changing their behavior.

  12. For this week's class, we were having talk with Dr. Isa discussing about Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational interviewing is a person-centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. It was developed by Miller, one of Carl Rogers’ students in the 80s. He develops this counseling style because during that time most people use the Gestalt approach for addiction problems and the confrontation skill make the client resistant until he had this idea to develop motivational interviewing. In the MI session, the counselor uses OARS/AROSE skills in the MI session that refer to open-ended question skills, affirmation, reflecting, summarizing and elicit change talk in working with the client rather than confrontation.
Motivational interviewing, the transtheoretical model, and behavior change are related to each other and Dr. had discussed them deeply with us. Collaboration, evocation, and autonomy are 3 components of MI spirits. The MI spirit leads helps the client reduce forced feelings in changing behavior and it brings empowerment towards the client. We as a client cannot force, do confrontation or persuade them to change but we need to work with them together in helping their behavior change. Even though they go through relapse we as a counselor cannot reject them and educate them that relapse is not failure but a destination then the will willing to go the next session because feel that the counselor accepting them.
Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. Intrinsic motivation is most important than extrinsic motivation because most people who have intrinsic motivation will not easily be facing a relapse. Changing extrinsic to intrinsic the counselor must know and explore values and life goals also reframing the person’s negative statements. Next, we must know the principles of motivational interviewing build from AREDS acronyms that refer to avoid argumentation, roll with resistance, express empathy, develop discrepancy, and support self-efficacy. MI principles help the counselor to deal with resistant clients in accepting the counseling session. There are 4 types of resistance clients who are arguing, denying, ignoring, and interrupting.
There are a few assessment tools that the counselor can use while doing MI sessions that are the stage of change, payoff matrix, ICR scales, and value cards In conclusion, I enjoyed this week's class and I'm gaining a lot of knowledge from the program for this week. I can say that I’m still at a beginner stage and I need to learn more also do more practice to be a good counselor in conduct Motivational Interviewing sessions and also thanks for Dr. Rashid and the class committee to organizing this talk successfully.

  13. This class collaboration with Dr Isa is very great because it can give us free time to do other work. Anyway, this talk is about Motivational Interviewing (MI). What I can understand is that Mi is one of the Counseling approaches. Where this MI approach is a client-centered counseling style to bring about behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambiguities. This MI principles to express the sympathy through reflective hearing. Differentiate the purpose or value of the client from the current behavior. Must avoids direct discussions and quarrels with client. The counselor needs to adapt to client resistance rather than direct resistance and supports the effectiveness and the confidences of client, known as AREDS. Overall, MI is a method to build up the client's motivation by guiding them with the steps which is EFEP, Engaging in the patient's life. Focusing what the client unsure or struggling to make a change. Evoking the clinet to open up about their reasons for change and helps the patient in Planning how to change their behavior and encourages their commitment to change.

  14. Based from the talk, Dr. Isa explained that motivational interviewing is the direction that objects to help individuals explore and overcome their interpersonal ambivalence which is guided from person-centered counselling style. There are three components of MI spirit. The first one is collaboration which means to work in partnership. Secondly, is evocation that draws out ideas and solutions from individuals. Next, is the autonomy which is the decision making that is left to the person. From the talk, I also understand that the motivation to change is evoked from the individual self, not from externally which his or her-self needs to work on the task and resolve the ambivalence. While, the role of the counsellor is directively helping the client to examine and resolve the ambivalence. Furthermore, in the talk also mentioned the six characteristics of motivational interviewing which are guiding, dancing by following the flow of the client, attentively listening, doing collaborative conversation, evokes from a person what he or she already has and honouring of a person’s autonomy. It is also important for the counsellor to give motivation for the client to make changes by making them realize and explore the values that they can get when making the changes. Next, the counsellor can also highlight the core value discrepancy that motivates change. Not only that, it is also significant for the counsellor to explore the life goals of the clients and make analysis between where the client is now and where she or he wants to be and change. Once the client decides on the goals, it is then their choice and self-determination whether they want to achieve it or not. It is also important for the counsellor to reframe the client’s negative statement if there are any throughout the process. Moreover, when doing motivational interviewing, there are certain principles that the counsellor can follow by using “AREDS” acronyms. It is crucial for the counsellor to avoid arguing with the client. Next, it is also the role of the counsellor to roll with the resistance client and try the best to express empathy to the client. To make the client feel more motivated, it is also important to develop discrepancy and support self-efficacy of the client. Next, I also learn that there are several assessment tools that can be used in motivational interviewing which are stage of change, payoff matrix, ICR scales and value cards. Thus, the motivational change process required planning, evoking, focusing and engaging between the counsellor and the client. Then, with the skills, it can make the client experience the six stages of change which are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse throughout the behavioural change process.

  16. Assalammualaikum dr, first of all thankyou so much for invited dr Isa and us to this forum. Alhamdulillah ehat i got from this forum is basically talked about Motivational interviewing(MI. Motivational interviewing is a technique in which you become a helper in the change process and express acceptance of your client. It is a way to interact with substance-using clients, not merely as an adjunct to other therapeutic approaches, and a style of counseling that can help resolve the ambivalence that prevents clients from realizing personal goals. Motivational interviewing builds on Carl Rogers' optimistic and humanistic theories about people's capabilities for exercising free choice and changing through a process of self-actualization. Then, its include the AREDS technique and OARS & AROSE for use in counseling session also.
This forum can give motivation to the counsellor also in every aspect. Thank you again dr.

I like the concepts of Motivational Interviewing especially when used for clients struggling with addiction. I think it puts a more positive light on other addiction models by focusing on ambivalence of feelings and motivation. I think that the stages of change make sense, especially adding the sixth stage of relapse. Most clients with substance use will relapse, so I think it is important to recognize this. helps the client to put things into perspective, to understand their life’s goals and what’s standing in the way of achieving them. The stages of change help to emphasize that change is a progression and sometimes steps must be repeated. 18. Assalamualaikum, Thankyou to Dr Rashid for inviting Dr Isa to give talk about the motivational interviewing.
In short, what I have found from the talk is motivational interviewing define as directive person centered counselling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. Then, the spirit of motivational interviewing which firstly partnership means that work collaboratively and avoid the expert role, second is acceptance which counselor should respecting the client’s autonomy, potential, strength and perspective. Then third is compassion which counselor need to keep the client’s best interest in mind and lastly is evocation it is the best ideas come from the client.Next, Dr Isa explain about motivation and ambivalence. According to Dr Isa motivation it a fundamental to change and it can be modified. It is influenced by external factors and social interactions. While ambivalence refer to natural phase in the process of change and it is normal aspect of human nature and ambivalence is key issues to resolve for change to occur. Next, the four core skill in MI is OARS which open question, affirmation, reflection and summaries.
Lastly is about the process of motivational interviewing. There have four process, first is engaging which engaging is the process of establishing a trusting and mutually respectful relationship. Second is focusing means is a going process of seeking and maintaining direction, third is evoking which is elicting client’s own motivation for change and the last process is planning which to developing a specific change plan that the client agree to and is willing to implements.

  19. Assalamualaikum & thank you Dr Rashid for inviting Dr Isa for this good sharing about motivational interviewing. From this talk session, I know that motivational interviewing is a direction where person centred counselling style aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. There are three main components of the motivational interviewing spirit which also help counsellors deal with resistant clients namely collaboration, evocation and autonomy. There are also some of the motivational interviewing characters namely guiding, dancing, listening, collaborative conversation, evokes from a person what already have and honouring of a person's autonomy. Then, Dr Isa mentioned some of the motivational principles of interviewing that need to be held with the AREDS acronym, namely avoid arguing, roll with resistance, express empathy, develop discrepancy and support self-efficacy. Through this talk, I get 4 assessment tools that can be implemented in this motivational interviewing which is stage of change, payoff matric, ICR scales and value cards. In the direction of change, some stage of change needs to be followed where it is also a stage found in the transtheoretical model which is pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse. Lastly, one of the training on motivational interviewing skills that can be used in the session is first, review the definition, practice the skills right after definition, utilize the OARS worksheet and utilize the motivational interviewing workbook. This motivational interviewing is very useful to counsellors in order to achieve the purpose and goals of their clients. Through this sharing, there is also a clearer exposure on how to apply this skill when faced with clients. 20. Assalamualaikum, Thank you for inviting Dr. Rashid to speak about the motivational interview with Dr. Isa. In short, what I learned from the talk is that motivational interviewing describes a type of therapy focused on the directive individual that seeks to help people explore and overcome their ambivalence about behavior change. The motivational interviewing spirit has three key components that often help counselors work with resistant clients, namely teamwork, evocation and autonomy. Some of the motivational interview characters still exist: directing, dancing, listening, collaborative conversation, evoking what an individual already has and respecting the autonomy of a person. Precontemplation, reflection, planning, intervention, and maintenance are the phases of improvement in motivational interviews (sometimes a sixth stage added like relapse and termination). One acronym used in the OARS motivational interview: open questions, affirmation, listening reflectively, and description. The AREDS strategy and OARS & AROSE are then used for use in therapy sessions as well. This forum will also provide the counsellor with motivation in any way. Again, thank you Dr.

  21. Assalamualaikum Dr. I would like to thank Dr. Rashid for organizing the motivational interviewing session, not forgetting the very clear explanation from Dr. Isa about these topics. Sometimes, I will exchange between motivational interviewing session and counseling session because this session applies the same skills (OARS) stand for an open-ended question, affirmation, reflection, and summarizing, and also counseling session also uses the same skills. But it will make us more proficient in these counseling skills.
Next, what distinguishes the two is motivational interviewing (MI) which is a counseling approach designed to help individuals resolve ambivalence about their behavior change while counseling aims to help the individual understand himself and his environment. What I learn from this MI is the process, spirit, principles (AREDS), MI SKILLS (OARS). It is good keywords to understand them very well and clearly. Thank you, Dr.

  22. Assalamualaikum Dr. Thank you for providing the opportunity for us to learn more about Motivational Interviewing from Dr. Isa. Alhamdulillah, from the talk, I am able to gain new knowledge related to Motivational Interviewing such as the stages and well as the techniques of Motivational Interviewing that can be applied in a counseling session. During the sharing session with Dr Isa I learned about the spirit of Motivational Interviewing, which is meant to deal with the ambivalence of someone to change. Other than that, I am also able to gain knowledge about the principle as well as the characteristics of Motivational Interviewing that should be applied and conducted during the counseling session. From this talk also, I have learned how we, as a future counselor can help our client, especially a drug addict client to change their extrinsic to intrinsic motivation. In addition, I am able to gain new knowledge about the resistance of the client when they are dealing with the counseling session. From the talk, it taught me that during the counseling session, our client can show their resistance by ignoring, arguing, denying and interrupting the session with the counselor. Joining this talk also helps me to improve my understanding about the stages of changes that usually occur when the clients are trying to change their old behaviour. Furthermore, this talk also gives me some insight about how a Motivational Interviewing practitioner should be trained and how important it is for them to be well trained so that they can apply the right method to conduct Motivational Interviewing to their client.

  23. Assalamualaikum Dr., from this talk I learned about relapse that is means that individual will start over at an early stage because they be feel triggered. Then, there are 12 roadblocks of communication which is making jugdments, sending solutions, avoiding concerns, preaching, commanding, moralizing, threatening, one-upping, shaming, interpreting, interrogating and kidding. Next, I also know about stages of change that provide pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance.

  24. Alhamdulillah. Thank you Dr Rashid for invited Dr Isa to give a talk about Motivational Interviewing (MI). What I have learned from the talk is about the spirit of motivational interviewing, motivational interviewing principles to use with individuals on behavior change, how we can assess motivation for readiness to change and a foundation to build skills. Motivational is directive, from person centered counseling style, it’s aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change.
After that, I also learned about ambivalence. Ambivalence is key issue to resolve for change to occur. Each of person have their own ambivalence which is they want, but they don’t want to. If we don’t have ambivalence, so it can say that it will be no behavior change in person itself. So it is actually the important elements for behavior change because ambivalence is our friends. Next, changing extrinsic to intrinsic, we need to know and explore values. Core value discrepancy motivates change and we need to explore life goals, discrepancy between where the person is and where he/she wants to be whether it is a choice or self-determination. We also can reframe the person’s negative statements.
Next, the acronym for principles of motivational interviewing is “AREDS”. A for “avoid arguing”, R for “roll with resistance”, E for “express empathy”, D for “develop discrepancy” and S for “support self-efficacy”. Spirit and principle both are different which is spirit is from soul and principle is what we want to hold on. Next is resistance. There are four types of resistance that are arguing, denying, ignoring and interrupting. The more one talks about non-change behaviors, the more a person is likely to do them. Resistance often stems from fear of change.
And last is about motivational interviewing skills that we used the acronym for it like “AROSE” which mean A for “Affirmations”, R for “Reflective listening”, O for “Open ended questions”, S for “Summaries” and E for “Elicit change talk”. In reflective listening, we allow individual to feel heard and it's allows us to confirm perceptions. We also can make a simple declarative statement such as “You feel pretty discouraged right now”. Next, there is a lot of strategies to elicit change talk such as asking evocative questions, using readiness rulers, exploring the decisional balance, looking back/looking forward, using hypotheticals, and key questions.

  30. Thank you Dr Rashid for sponsoring the talk that actually give many benefit to counseling students and tge opportunity to understand better about the topic of Motivational interviewing. In this talk, Dr Isa have give a good and smooth explanation about the topic. Generally, Motivational interviewing is a technique in which you become a helper in the change process and express acceptance of your client. It is a way to interact with substance-using clients, not merely as an adjunct to other therapeutic approaches, and a style of counseling that can help resolve the ambivalence that prevents clients from realizing personal goals. Besides, there are four steps used in motivational interviewing which is engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. These help to build trust and connection between the patient and the clinician, focus on areas that may need to be changed and find out the reasons the patient may have for changing or holding onto a behavior. This helps the clinician to support and assist the patient in their decision to change their behavior and plan steps to reach this behavioral change. These steps do not always happen in this order. Lastly, big thanks and congrats to our friends help Dr Rashid for manage a good talk’s program like this 👍🏻😊

  32. First of all, I want to thank Dr Rashid and the class committee for organizing this talk. Also thanks too to Dr Isa for giving a depth and clear explanations about Motivational Interviewing (MI). From this talk, what can I understand, Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one of the techniques that involve enhancing a client’s motivation to change. In this talk, Dr Isa has mentioned that there are three components of Motivational Spirit (MI) which are, Collaboration, Evocation and Autonomy. Not only that, but Dr Isa also mentioned in his talk about the Principles of Motivational Interviewing which are Avoid arguing, Roll with resistance, Express empathy, Develop discrepancy and Support self-efficacy (AREDS). Honestly, at first, I am a little bit confused between motivational interviewing session and counselling session because this session applies the same skills (OARS) stand for an open-ended question, affirmation, reflection, and summarizing, and also counselling session also uses the same skills. But after hearing the explanation, I think I can distinguish both of it.
For me, this topic very interesting and very meaningful for us. The motivational interviewing is very important in helping clients to overcome their ambivalence and help them to build their own incentive to change.

  33. Alhamdulillah for the talk by Dr Isa on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational interviewing is a directive approach to motivate client to change a negative behavior. It is a client/person centered approach of counseling and the counselor will also help the client in resolving their ambivalence about their behavior change. We learnt in depth on MI from this talk, such as on the MI Spirit, the characteristics of MI, the principals of MI, the stages of change, and the MI skills. Other than that, MI is to change the extrinsic motivation to an intrinsic motivation for behavioral change. Having self-determination in the client helps greatly in the change, and also in exploring the clients' life goals and reframing their negative statement, motivating their change in behavior. As counselors, we do not talk much during the session, except in exploring the clients motivation. We will also engage in change talk, to motivate the client to change. However, if the client is quite resistant at first, counselors do not force the change in behavior, but instead will roll with his/her resistance and engage with change talk as time goes by.

From this talk , I learn that motivational interviewing is a form of therapy that includes improving the commitment of a patient to improve. Motivational Interviewing focuses on the discovery and resolution of ambivalence and focuses on motivational mechanisms that promote progress within the individual. MI's spirit is focused on three main aspects which is collaboration between the counselor and the client, evocation the ideas of the client and autonomy of the client. The principles of motivational interviewing AREDS are avoid arguing, roll with resistance, express empathy, develop discrepancy and support self efficacy. The acronym used in motivational interviewing OARS: open questions, affirmation, reflective listening, and summary. Another acronym is RULE: resist the righting reflex, understanding the client’s own motivation, listen with empathy, and empower. After hearing the talk , I think I can distinguish all the acronym and I will apply it during the counselling session. 37. Alhamdulillah. Firstly, i want to say Thank you Dr rashid for arrange the talk to us. Based on my understanding that Dr isa was explaining is motivational interviewing or MI involving ambivalence. Ambivalence is the feeling of unsure which is like “I want to do but I don’t want to”. Dr isa said that ambivalence is normal and we can help the person to change and explore their habit.
Moreover, there is three important component that Dr isa has mentioned which are the spirit for MI. The component is collaboration, evocation and autonomy. Collaboration is refers to work together between client and counsellor and usually when counsellor use collaboration with client, they tend to ask open-ended question toward the client. Secondly, evocation is more to the hypothetical question. For example, “how was your life if you are stop to smoke from now on?”. This is a suitable way on how to make client make a rational thinking or rationalize client thinking. Lastly, autonomy. Autonomy is refers to whatever the decision, it was the client decision. No one could push them to make decision unless it was from them. This is good for lessen their resistance when counsellor have a session with them.
Last but not least, i want to say that i really appreciate for this talk and its make me more understand about MI and how to apply it .

  40. Assalaamualaikum, today's class based on Dr. Isa talks. He explains about core skills and the processes of Motivational Interviewing. He also said that when we are changing our behavior, we always have feeling of ambivalence because we are having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something. . Besides, we as a counselor can see whether the client being ambivalence through the way the client talked. For example, in the client’s sentences, there are words like ‘but’ ‘just’, so it shows that client having an uncertain feeling toward something. Moreover, we as a counselor should use the core clinical skills of Motivational Interviewing like Open-ended question, Affirmation, Reflective listening, and Summary Reflection to explore the client more about the changes that they want to change and guide them to change little by little based on the stages of Motivational Interviewing. The counselor has to ask questions based on the importance, confidence, and commitment to the behavior that the client engages in now. It also will encourage the client to what they do to change the old behavior. Next, Dr. Isa explained about 12 to do block communication which is very important to a counselor avoid that in the sessions. Overall, I understand the explanation of MI and how to apply the skills.

    1. Alhamdulillah, Thank you Dr. Rashid and our committee members involved for organizing this Motivational Interviewing Talk. Throughout the talk, I was very excited to hear more about the motivational interviewing that was delivered in great depth and used a very clear explanation to understand. This talk is very useful to be use by counselors especially when dealing with addicted clients. Through the presented, I gained a lot of information through this talk session, among them is that I can find out more in depth what motivational interviewing is. Form the talk, motivational interviewing is a directive towards person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. In understanding motivational interviewing, there are three components of MI spirit which consists collaboration. Collaboration refers to working in partnership, where the key worker is supportive rather than persuasive. It means, a counselor working alongside a client rather than in front of or opposed to them. Second, evocation, which is role of a counselor to draw out ideas and solutions of the client their own perceptions, goals, values, thus key worker starts with the assumption that the resources and motivation for change reside in the client. Third, autonomy, autonomy support refers to decision making left to the person or in another words, recognizing that the true power for change rests within the client. Other than that, through this talk, I learned about the five principles of motivational interviewing which are, first avoid arguing and direct confrontation. Second, roll with client resistance. Third, express empathy through reflective listening. Fourth, develop discrepancy between client’s goals or values and their current behavior, and fifth through support self-efficacy and optimism. In motivational interviewing, also stated the five concept stages of change that can be used as a reference by a counselor to an addicted client, namely pre-contemplation, that is an individual unaware of the problem and has not thought about change. Second, contemplation, its refer to an individual thinking about change, in the near future that usually within the next 6 month. Third is preparation. Preparation is when an individual making a plan to change plans and setting gradual goals that usually within in 1 month. Fourth is action. Action is when an individual makes the specific changes to their life style and has been made within in past 6 months. Fifth is maintenance. Maintenance refers to an individual makes continuation of desirable actions, or repeating periodic recommended steps. In stages of change, an addiction client usually face with the relapse process which is returning to their older behaviors and abandoning the new changes. In this stage, a counselor need to determine the triggers and makes some plans for future prevention. Last but not least, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Rashid and the organizers for organizing a very clear and extensive information about the motivational interviewing.

  42. Alhamdulillah. Thank you Dr Rashid and Dr Isa for this Motivational Interviewing talk. I get many useful information from this talk. This talk is very beneficial to a counsellor that dealing with addictive client. This is because Motivational Interviewing is a counselling method that empowers clients through an interview-style discussion with a licenced counsellor to make actionable behavioural improvements in their lives. This approach focuses on talking about change in which patients communicate their need and motivation to make changes in their lives. This Motivational Interviewing technique understands and embraces the fact that people who need to make improvements in their lives approach counselling at varying stages of readiness to modify their behaviors. A motivational interviewing helps people to learn how to alter addictive habits effectively. The counsellor is merely need to be there to help the client understand their thought process and discover the benefits and negatives of moving forward. Lastly, again i would like to said thank you to Dr Rashid and Dr Isa for organizing this talk.

  43. Assalamualaikum Dr. What I got based on Dr. Isa talk is motivational interviewing (MI) in the form of a directive and can be defined as a person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. Besides that, there are three components of MI spirit or soul which are collaboration, evocation (hypothetical questions) and autonomy (how to move forward when resistance). There are also principles of MI which are avoid arguing, roll with resistance, express empathy, develop discrepancy and support self efficacy by using an acronym “AREDS”. MI also has skills from the acronym “AROSE” which means affirmations, reflecting listening, open ended questions, summaries and elicit change talk. The elicit change talk skills are like asking evocative questions, using readiness rulers, exploring the decisional balance, looking back or looking forward, using hypotheticals and key questions. Lastly, we as a future counselor can train ourselves on motivational skills by reviewing the definition and practicing the skills while encourage a person to develop personal motivation for engaging in the change process.

Futhermore, I am glad to share a quote that I got from this program which were “Relapse is not a failure; it is a destination”. It is not an easy way for addiction people to change directly and automatically, it is needing some motivational to build the positive perspective for changing the habitual behaviour and it is used to increase internal motivation. I was looking about the review resistance that basically happen in counselling session which are Arguing when client always asking why it happened to itself. Second is Denying when client being deny after what that them did. Third, is Ignoring when client being ignore in the session and the lastly is Interupting which client being interrupt when Counselor handle the session. There were a develop discrepancy when Counselor need to make sure their client having a changing of behaviour in a right way by elicit a client goals and values.

Other than that, there were 4 assessment tools that used in Motivational Interviewing which are Stage of Change, Payoff Matrix, The ICR Scales and Value Cards. In this semester, I was trained to apply the stage of change and it is useful for me to change my addiction behaviour. These 4 assessment tools, I am already knowing a few assessments including the ICR scales which basically used in inventory. I was introduced about the difference between Motivational Interviewing, CBT (Change Behavioural Therapy) and IMR. This program makes me more understood and I will try to apply in the counselling session. Thanks again Dr. and I am really enjoyed your program. May Allah always bless you for giving us more understanding. Ameen.

From the session, I learned more about Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational Interviewing is a common approach that usually use in rehabilitation technique for addiction counselling. I got to know about the MI Spirit, MI process and also principles. The talk was very useful to provide knowledge as a foundation to build skills to apply in dealing with clients for addiction and rehabilitation counselling.
Motivational interviewing is directive, person-centered counselling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. There are 3 components of MI spirit. Firstly, collaboration which mean that counsellor and client working in partnership. Secondly, evocation which is draw out ideas and solutions from individuals. Lastly, autonomy which is decision-making is up for the person to make. The keyword for Motivational Interviewing is ambivalence.
The 4 processes in Motivational Interviewing include (1) Engaging, which is the process of establishing a trusting and mutually respectful relationship, (2) Focusing, which is an ongoing process of seeking and maintaining direction, (3) Evoking, which is eliciting a client’s own motivation for change and (4) Planning which is developing a specific change plan that the client agrees to and is willing to.

  55. Assalamu’alaikum w.b.t, I learn about Motivational Interviewing (MI) through a talk titled, “Motivation Interviewing Talk” given by Dr. Isa himself together with my lecturer of Individual Lab Counseling, Dr. Rashid as a moderator. The talk was held on Tuesday, 15 December 2020 at 2 pm in Microsoft Teams like usual. I am excited to learn about this topic because it is quite eye catching for me as I read the title and imagine what it is about. As I heard what Dr. Isa explained, I now know that Motivational Interviewing is like one of the technique used in counseling session especially for clients that have a problem with their behavior and want to change it or need to change it. More specific it is called as behavior change (BC) like what I learn this semester in subject Drug Rehabilitation Counseling. For me, a new knowledge is very precious to be learn because we do not about it and going to get insight later on in the future and practice it too. There are many things being exposed in the talk about Motivational Interviewing such as what it is about, the components of it, the characteristics, the principles need to be followed in this Motivational Interviewing, the process of it, assessment tools used, and what skills used. All of these are best and benefit me as a student of counseling which I might face a situation in the future with clients that have a problem with their behavior. Thus, I can use a knowledge in this Motivational Interviewing to handle the clients and make it a successful session. In all these mentioned, I actually get attracted when Dr. Isa talk about resistance. A clients that resistance are very hard to handle and become one of the challenges for a counselor. He said that this type of clients is a normal things for counselor, it also include arguing, denying, ignoring and interrupting. I imagining someone that I know when I read the sentence, “The more one talks about non-change behaviors, the more a person is likely to do them”, because he like to ask money and when the other said that he never change, he ignore it and asking for more. It is the same situation. Well, all of the knowledge in the talk are very useful and interesting for me. Thank you to Dr. Isa for his good explanation and sharing and also to Dr. Rashid for his good companion as a moderator. I will surely make a good benefit of what I learn and use the skills in the Motivational Interviewing in the future when doing a session with client, in shaa Allah. That is all from me, thank you.

  57. Assalamualaikum Dr. Rashid. First and foremost, I would like to thank Dr. Rashid for inviting Dr. Isa to deliver the talk on Motivational Interviewing (MI). I learnt a lot through this talk about Motivational Interviewing. Basically, motivational interviewing is a directive, person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. In motivational interviewing, there are three components of MI spirit which are collaboration, evocation and autonomy. Next, there a few principles of MI with ‘AREDS’ acronyms. ‘AREDS’ stands for six principles. ‘A’ stands for avoid arguing, ‘R’ is roll with resistance, ‘E’ is express empathy, ‘D’ stands for develop discrepancy and lastly ‘S’ is support self-efficacy. In addition, I got to know that MI process consist of four process which are engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. In every MI process, the counselors will follow on the stages. For MI client, they will be in any stages of change based on Transtheoretical models namely pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and lastly relapse. Usually, the counselors will use the MI skills in the process which are affirmations, reflective listening, open ended questions, summaries and elicit change talk. Lastly, the training on MI skills are by reviewing the definition, practicing the skills right after the definition, utilizing the OARS worksheet and utilizing the MI workbook. 60. Assalamulaikum Dr Rashid, thank you for invited Dr Isa in giving talk about motivational interviewing. There are many knowledge that I get from this talk. Motivational interviewing is directive, person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. There are 4 process in interviewing process, first we must plan in good plan for behavior change. Second is evoking, then move in focusing on what we want actually and last is engaging. After we know the process, we know about the stage of change. First is pre-contemplation which is people not aware to change and they did not think about it yet. Second stage is contemplation which is people thinking about change in the near future. They instill hope, positive reinforcement for harm reduction. Third stage is preparation, which is people will make a plan to change the behavior and setting goal. Next is make action, that means people will do the thing that they have plans to change. Then, in doing action people have to maintenance it. So that the action we do will work smoothly. The last is relapse process which means if people tend to do again because it determines the triggers and plan for future prevention. All of this process is very important thing in motivational interviewing. Overall this talk is very benefit to me as a counselor.

  62. Assalamualaikum Dr. Alhamdulillah, thanks a lot to Dr. Rashid and class committee for organising an impressive talk. Also, thank you very much for Dr. Isa as he explained on "Motivational Interviewing(MI)" very clearly. Motivational Interviewingis a directive, client-centred counselling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. It is most centrally defined not by technique but by its spirit as a facilitative style for interpersonal relationship.

Next, there 3 components in motivational interviewing which are collaboration, evoking and anatomy. Collaboration is a partnership between the therapist and the client, grounded in the point
of view and experiences of the client. Meanwhile, evoking is drawing out the individual's own thoughts and
ideas, rather than imposing their opinion as motivation and commitment to change is most powerful and durable when it comes from the client. Lastly, anatomy is let the decision make by the individual to follow through with making changes happen. Besides, there are 5 skills in motivational interviewing which are affirmations, reflective listening, open ended questions, summaries and elicit change talk.

Last but not least, I think that I got a better understanding of Motivational Interviewing by engaging in this talk. I feel very grateful and glad because i gained lots of knowledge about this topic. I am really hope that i can apply it in future as counselor.

  67. This week, all students in Malaysia have been directed to return to campus. There are many things we need to do before going home to make sure everything is safe and do not leave anything important. I feel very grateful to be able to conduct several lectures and laboratory classes at USIM.
This week, Dr. Isa shared a talk about MI Elements in the Individual Counselling class under the supervision of Dr. Rashid. Because of that, Dr. Isa has taken the opportunity to run a replacement class in this talk session. Lots of input I get here to handle abnormal clients.
Dr. Isa managed to explain to the students using sentences that are easy to understand to practice in the future. Dr. Isa also advised to be careful in conducting counselling sessions with clients who are addicted because there are many possibilities that can occur if the wrong steps in conducting the session.
In this partnership I can also see how to use MI Elements in a counselling session. I also know the importance and reasons why it is necessary for counsellors to use the MI Elements approach so that counsellors identify the cause of the problem more specifically and be able to conduct counselling sessions smoothly and successfully. There is no denying the effectiveness of MI Elements in this counselling session is one of the best ways to handle various issues.
In addition, the use of AORS is also an important tool when conducting counselling sessions with any client, not just limited to clients who are addicted. AORS stands for Open question, Afforming (body gesture, statement and ect), Reflecting listening and Summarize. These AORS have also been mentioned in the partnership presented by Dr. Isa. I hope that I will be able to continue conducting counselling sessions with clients using AORS and MI Elements which have been clearly described by Dr. Isa. Indeed, this partnership is very beneficial for every counsellor to practice it in the counselling session that will be conducted.

  68. Motivational interviewing is a method in which you become a helper in the process of transformation and demonstrate approval of your client. It's a way to connect with substance-using clients, not only as an adjunct to other clinical approaches, and a form of therapy that can help overcome the ambivalence that keeps clients from reaching personal goals.

Motivational interviewing draws on Carl Rogers' positive and humanistic ideas about people's desire to practise free choice and progress through a process of self-actualization. The therapeutic relationship between Rogerian and motivational interviewers is a democratic collaboration.

Your position in motivational interviewing is a guideline, with the intention of producing self-motivation and behavioural improvement from the client, in addition to creating client discrepancy to increase motivation for positive change.

Essentially, motivational interviewing unlocks the capacity for beneficial improvement that everyone has. While some people will continue to improve on their own, others need more formal care and support over the long process of rehabilitation. Motivational interviewing is a critical prelude to later therapeutic practise, even for clients with low preparation.

Motivational interviewing is a form of therapy focused on the following beliefs, for example, that drug use and change) ambivalence is natural and constitutes a significant motivational barrier to recovery. In addition, ambivalence can be overcome by working with the inner motivations and beliefs of your client.

The relationship between you and your client is a joint collaboration that brings valuable knowledge to each of you. The empathic, compassionate, and directive-based model of therapy sets out the conditions in which progress will occur.

This topic briefly addresses ambivalence and its role in the motivation of the client. Five fundamental concepts of motivational interviewing are then presented to resolve ambivalence and promote the process of transformation. Opening techniques to be used for clients in the early stages of recovery are also provided.

Fron the talk, I am able to gain new knowledge related to Motivational Interviewing. What i have learned is about the stages and well as the techniques of Motivational Interviewing that can be applied in a counseling session. During the sharing session with Dr. Isa, I learned about the spirit of Motivational Interview, which is meant to deal with the ambivalence of someone to change. Other than that, I am also in a position to gain knowledge of the principle as well as the characteristics of the Motivational Interview that should be applied and conducted during the counselling session. I also learned from this talk how we, as a future counsellor, can help our client, especially the drug addict client, to change their extrinsic motivation to the inner motivation. In addition, I am able to gain new knowledge of the client's resistance when it comes to the counselling session. From the talk taught me that during a counselling session, our client can demonstrate their resistance by ignoring, arguing, denying, and interrupting a counselling session. Joining this talk also helps me to improve my understanding of the stages of change that usually occur when clients are trying to change their old behaviour. In addition, this talk also gives me some insight into how a Motivational Interview Practitioner should be trained and how important it is for them to be well trained so that they can use the right method to conduct Motivational Interviews with their client. 73. first of all, thank you to Dr Rashid and the class committee for making the talk happen. Also big thanks to Dr Isa for delivering wonderful talk about Motivational Interviewing. what i have learned from this talk is The main point of motivational interviewing is always relied on client motivational. The focus point of Motivational interviewing is client was ambivalent and to treat substances use disorder. It is also an effective way of talking with people about change. in this topic I also learn the core skills to deal with substance use clients which is OARS. O is for open ended question, A is for affirmation also known as acknowledge, R is reflection and the last one is S for summary. This core skills are needed to know as a counselor to treat the client basically I will say it look same as all the session in counselor. Other than that, this motivational interviewing also not same as cognitive behavioral therapy or reality therapy or existential therapy but it deep and more focusing on substance use or other issues where motivation is considered to change. this motivational interviewing also really looks a same as person centered therapy of how the therapist relates with the clients in terms of empathy and active listening that is very similar to person centered therapy. Motivational therapy also works to expand the gap between the choices and individuals in making their behaviors and their goals. Motivational interviewing also will view the client as having everything they need to make the change that they want.

  74. This learning is about where Dr Isa is invited to give a talk related to MI, Motivational Interviewing with Dr Rashid. This topic is important to learn and understand in order to face addicts out there easily. Also, everything taught can be applied to current counselors in conducting counseling sessions. The talk was going smoothly and clearly. Then, what is important to understand in Addiction Counseling, it is closely related to behavior change, transtheoretical model, and motivational Interviewing
As told in the talk, Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic modality to treat substance use disorder. It is slightly different from other modalities such as the method of therapy in the theories learned such as cognitive therapy, reality therapy, existential therapy and so on. Motivational interviewing is more focused on substance issues to give motivation and considered central to make some sort of change to seeing relief from symptoms. The therapists or counselors who use this method works to expand the gap between the individual choices is making, their behavior and their goals. In addition, the purpose of motivational interviews is to encourage patients to be active participants in the process of change by evoking their intrinsic motivation for change. And all this despite the ambivalence and what often looks like a resistance, which is considered a normal part of the process of change. Because ambivalence is uncomfortable, often resulting in delays that are often mistaken for resistant. But every decision made brings pros and cons of making a change.

  79. During this collaborative talk, I acknowledge more on motivational interviewing which had been conduct by Dr Isa and Dr Rashid. Thus, it helps in enhancing my knowledge about motivational interviewing more deeply. In general, this motivational interviewing is the way we view the client or see the client from a positive angle that the client has everything or advantages that can help them make changes to their behavior change. It is a therapeutic modality introduced by William Miller in 1990. This motivational interviewing focuses more on helping clients change behavior from negative to positive and unhealthy to the most healthier. Some psychologists or counselors overview that this motivational interviewing seems to be similar to the person-centered theory that enhancing the change process through collaboration with an attitude and set of technique. However, the use or motivational interviewing is often associated with the gestalt approach but will have an effect where the client will experience resistance and eventually form an ineffective counseling session. Often, this motivational interviewing function will be used as a theory to change a person's behavior. Motivational interviewing is more of a directive, person centered counseling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behavior change. For example, for someone who wants to quit smoking can use this motivational interviewing.
Next, the three main components of motivational interviewing spirit are collaboration, evocation and autonomy. The way collaboration works is through working in partnership and for evocation is through draw out ideas and solutions from individuals. While for autonomy is through decision making left to the person or client. Therefore, these three components are closely related to motivational interviewing throughout the sessions between the counselor and the client. Furthermore, in this motivational interviewing as well, the counselor does not need to persuade the client to achieve the goals that have been set but most depend on the client himself. However the characteristic of motivational interviewing is guiding that more that directing, dancing rather than wrestling, listening as much as telling, collaborative conversation, evokes from a person what he or she already has and honoring of a person’s autonomy. As counselor, if we are using this syle, we need to focus more on ambivalence of the client as example like I want to, but I don’t want to, natural phase in the process of change, normal aspect of human nature, not pathological.
In addition, motivational interviewing also helps in changing extrinsic to intrinsic motivation. It also depend on client consent wether they want or not to change their behavior. It can be doned by exploring values, core value discrepancy motivates change, explore life goals that is discrepancy between where the person is or where he or she wants to be. It also relate choices and self detremination or reframing the person’s negative statements. The principle of motivational interviewing is according AREDS. Those capitals are stand for avoid arguing, roll with resistance, express emphaty, develop discrepancy and support self-efficacy. This principle have their duration and time frame. Furthermore, there are also four types of resistance client which called arguing, denying, ignoring and interrupting client. Other than that, in developing discrepancy it helps in difference between the person’s core values and life goals and their health behavior. In addition, it also in helping to difference between where the person is now and where he or she would like to be in the future. Hence, develop discrepancy also helps in elicit goals and values of the client in changing their behavior.

  81. First of all, syukur Alhamdulillah, with the permission of Allah I was able to attend a "majlis ilmu" that was very beneficial to the students. Next, I would like yo thank you to my beloved Dr, Dr. Abdul Rashid for providing the opportunity for us to learn more about Motivational Interviewing from the great panel which is Dr. Isa. Fron the talk, I am able to gain new knowledge related to Motivational Interviewing. Motivational interviewing builds on the constructive and humanistic ideas of Carl Rogers regarding people's ability to exercise free choice and change through a process of self-actualization. The therapeutic partnership between Roger and motivational interviewers is a democratic collaboration. Besides, motivational interviewing is a method by which you can assist in the transition process and show your client's approval. It's a way to interact with substance-using clients, not only as an adjunct to other therapeutic interventions, and a method of counselling that can help overcome the ambivalence that prevents clients from achieving personal goals.
Your position in motivational interviewing is a guideline, with the intention of producing self-motivation and behavioral improvement from the client, in addition to creating client discrepancy to increase motivation for positive change. Essentially, motivational interviewing unlocks everyone's potential for beneficial change. Although some people will continue to recover on their own, others will require more formal treatment and support throughout the long period of rehabilitation. Motivational interviewing is a vital prelude to later clinical practise, even with low-preparation clients. Moreover, motivational interviewing is a type of counselling that focuses on the following principles, for example, that substance use and change) ambivalence is normal and constitutes a major motivational obstacle to recovery. In addition, ambivalence can be resolved by engaging with the client's inner motives and values. The relationship between you and your client is a joint collaboration that brings valuable knowledge to each of you. The empathic, compassionate, and directive-based model of therapy sets out the conditions in which progress will occur. This subject briefly discusses the ambivalence and its role in the client's motivation. Five core principles of motivational interviewing are then presented to overcome ambivalence and to help the transition process. Opening methods to be used by clients in the early stages of rehabilitation are also offered.
